Quality Engineer

Summary

Reports to the Quality Manager. The position is responsible for performing, analyzing, and optimizing specific quality engineering processes for the Quality Assurance Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Write, review, edit, and manage Process Control Plans and Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) documents. Develop appropriate action plans to mitigate potential problems for high Risk Priority Number (RPN) scores from PFMEA analysis.
  • Conduct Gage Repeatability & Reproducibility (GR&R) studies for variable gages and develop appropriate action plans for gages with unfavorably high variation relative to customer requirements and/or standard industry practice.
  • Manage and continually improve the document control and record retention process.
  • Communicate directly with customers, suppliers and out plant processers, as required, related to new or existing products, product nonconformance, or process changes.
  • Obtain, read, and understand the requirements of various customer Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) standards. Communicate those requirements to the organization and implement the appropriate processes to ensure PPAP requirements are met when launching new products.
  • Regularly reviews and revises the quality management system (QMS) to improve and refine procedures and processes.
  • Participate in, and lead, formal problem-solving teams  to address the root cause of process and product nonconformance’s.
  • Responsible for making sure employees understand the procedures and processes that have been put into place, through training, providing information and informal and formal audits.
  • Other projects, responsibilities, and tasks may be assigned based on business needs and the inherent strengths of the individual selected for this role.

This includes where appropriate the application of statistical analysis and an understanding of methods for quantifying variation, including but not limited to Process Capability, Control Charts, and the fundamental concepts of probability that are the foundation of formal sampling plans.
  • Basic understanding of process auditing to an industry or regulatory standard. This includes the ability to identify and accurately describe observed differences between processes and the applicable requirements of a standard.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Relevant prior experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in machining, complex mechanical assembly, or dimensional inspection processes.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel, including the ability to create and manipulate data in spreadsheet form, understand syntax of basic Excel formulas, and ability to sort and filter data.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact directly with customers, suppliers, peers, and other business stakeholders at various levels. Ability to summarize complex data and present summary reports in easily understood, concise language.
  • This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. ‘Green Card Holder’), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Preferred (Optional) Qualifications:

  • Completion of a four-year degree program at an accredited college in a related field of study, OR completion of a two-year technical degree program and a minimum of four years of previous employment in manufacturing.
  • Applied GD&T interpretation and/or basic mechanical print reading.
  • Working knowledge of PPAP and/or First Article Inspection (FAI).
  • Experience in an AS9102, TS16949, ISO9001, or ISO13485 certified manufacturing facility.
  • One or more relevant certifications awarded by a professional organization. For example:  ASQ Certified Quality Engineer, ASQ Certified Quality Auditor, ASQ Certified Reliability Engineer, SME Certified Lean (Bronze, Silver, Gold), Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, etc.
